NACE Hosts International Marine Coatings Summit in Shanghai

HOUSTON, TX--(Marketwire - October 2, 2007) - In response to a newly revised industry standard that requires the commercial shipping industry to comply with new requirements for corrosion control by protective coatings, NACE International has announced dates for an International Marine Coatings Summit in Shanghai, China. Marine industry leaders from maritime organizations around the world will participate in the conference, held October 29-31, 2007, at the Shanghai Everbright Convention & Exhibition Center.

International societies, including ABS, ClassNK, CSSCSTRI, INTERTANKO, International Chamber of Shipping (ICS), Lloyd's Register, and RINA, are sponsoring organizations of the Summit.

NACE is organizing the event in response to the revised IMO ballast tank coating standard (IMO.215(82)) and the resulting need to assist owners in the difficult task of maintaining ballast tank coatings onboard ships in service. The new requirements developed when the International Maritime Organization (IMO), an agency of member states under the United Nations, instructed the International Association of Classifications Societies (IACS) to prepare a guide to enhance safety at sea by preventing degradation of ship structures.

The NACE Coating Inspector Program (CIP) is one of two benchmark programs listed in the revised standard, with the purpose of qualifying coating inspectors for ships under new construction. The International Marine Coatings Summit is providing opportunities for ship builders, owners, regulatory agencies, and users to participate in vital discussions on specification, implementation, and maintenance of marine coating systems. The evolution and implementation of the IMO guideline is one topic scheduled for discussion.

The Summit's technical sessions focus on a different theme each day:

Day 1: Hull Surface Management & New Technologies
Day 2: Ballast Tanks & IMO Performance Standards for Protective Coatings
Day 3: Coating Inspection Technologies & Organic Coatings

Session topics discussed by leaders in the international shipping community include: antifouling issues, hull resistance, onboard maintenance of coatings, surface preparation, and ballast water management.

Keynote speakers include Ms. Yang Xiang, China Classification Society (CCS), and Mr. Hiroshi (Dave) Iwamoto, Chairman, Committee for Expertise of Shipbuilding Specifics (CESS).

Advance registration is available through October 8, 2007. After October 19, registration is on-site only.
