NDP MOMENTUM-MONITOR: Crucial First-Time Voters Identify with NDP's Six Commitments

TORONTO, ONTARIO--(Marketwire - Sept. 27, 2007) - In this election, Howard Hampton and the NDP are tackling the troubling trend of declining voter participation among young people by speaking directly to the issues that matter to them.

Today's Kitchener-Waterloo Record reports that first time voters like what they are hearing from the NDP and Kitchener Centre candidate Rick Moffitt about Howard Hampton's Six Commitments - including ending classroom fundraising and removing existing barriers to university, college and training.

If St. Mary's High School students could have voted yesterday, New Democrat candidate Rick Moffitt would have been the clear winner.

Moffitt drew hearty applause from many of the 300 students in the St. Mary's audience when he spoke about reducing poverty, increasing the minimum wage and putting more money into schools. (...)

"The NDP persuaded me to vote for them," said Matthew Mazza, 18, who will be voting for the first time next month.

Tyler Walker, 18, said he was impressed with the NDP's views on the province's social safety net.

"I think I'm voting NDP," he said. "I like his personality and what he brings to the table. I felt I could relate."
