NDP Undermines Role of Parliament

Economic Update Forced Out of Commons

OTTAWA, ONTARIO--(Marketwire - Oct. 30, 2007) - Today's Statement on Canada's Economic and Fiscal health will be delivered outside the House of Commons because of obstruction by the NDP. The move to block an address in the House came as a surprise, when the NDP refused the usual consent.

"The move is a shocking reversal of the previous position of the NDP - that major announcements should be made in the House" said Peter Van Loan, Leader of the Government in the House of Commons. "This Government wants Parliament to play its central role in Canadian democracy. The NDP tactic undermining Parliament is both shocking and disappointing."

Ironically, in the 37th Parliament, NDP House Leader Libby Davies was a member of a Parliamentary Committee which called the trend to outside announcements an "irritation."

"It is important that more Ministerial Statements and Announcements be made in the House of Commons," stated the unanimous report of the Committee on which Davies sat. "Not only will this enhance the pre-eminence of Parliament, but it will also reiterate the legislative underpinning for governmental decisions."

Van Loan said numerous offers were made to get the agreement of the NDP to allow the Economic Update in the House, but they refused to budge. "Clearly, we have entered a new era where the NDP is not interested in making Parliament work" he concluded.
