NEC Licenses Digital Microwave Radio Patents to DragonWave

TOKYO--(Marketwire - September 28, 2007) - NEC Corporation has licensed its Canadian and U.S. digital microwave radio ("DMR") patents and counterpart patents in other countries to the Canadian provider of high-capacity wireless Ethernet equipment used in emerging IP networks, DragonWave Inc. Through the patent license agreement, NEC and DragonWave have also agreed not to assert their respective DMR patents against each other in the future.

The licensing agreement gives DragonWave access to a wider pool of intellectual property as it extends its High Capacity Wireless Ethernet portfolio. "DragonWave has been aggressively pursuing the development of industry leading all IP radio solutions since its inception in 2000. This agreement expands DragonWave's own portfolio of intellectual property, further enhancing our ability to deliver innovative solutions to our customers," said Peter Allen, President & CEO of DragonWave.

NEC has been actively pursuing licensing of its DMR patents to telecommunications manufacturers worldwide, has previously licensed its patents to several manufacturers in North America, and is currently in the process of negotiating similar patent licenses.

"NEC's unmatched depth of experience and technical capabilities in digital microwave radio systems and techniques are supported by our unsurpassed DMR patent portfolio, which has propelled us to a leading position as a global manufacturer in the DMR systems market," said Hideyuki Ogata, Vice President, Intellectual Asset Management Unit, NEC Corporation. "We have always embraced new and collaborative ways of driving innovation, and aim to contribute to the enhanced growth and development of the global telecommunications market by licensing our DMR technologies to DragonWave and other manufacturers."

In the 1960s, NEC began research and development in the area of DMR and produced the world's first commercial equipment in 1969. Since then, it has developed a broad range of DMR techniques and an unsurpassable DMR patent portfolio as a leading global manufacturer, contributing to the establishment of wireless communication networks across the globe. Well recognized for its high performance and reliability, NEC's DMR equipment, including its PASOLINK point-to-point wireless access systems, is shipped to126 countries.
