National Bank Group helps Mount Sinai advance fetal care

3D Ultrasound will help identify complications in the fetus earlier and more accurately

Attention: Assignment Editor, City Editor, Health/Medical Editor, News Editor TORONTO, ONTARIO--(CCNMatthews - Jan. 24, 2007) - A new three-dimensional (3D) medical imaging ultrasound unit will enable physicians at Mount Sinai Hospital to detect fetal problems earlier and more accurately, and will greatly improve their ability to treat some of these conditions in the unborn baby.

The Hospital is set to purchase a new 3D Ultrasound unit, thanks to a $200,000 gift from National Bank/National Bank Financial.

The ultrasound unit for fetal diagnosis and therapy will provide leading-edge, 3D imaging with impeccable 2D resolution, allowing enhanced imaging coupled with the ability to measure organ volumes. The unit will enable perinatal physicians to make more accurate diagnoses and offer treatment in difficult and complex cases. It will help both the parents and other consulting physicians better recognize and understand many intricate features of the unborn baby.

"Providing the Fetal Medicine Unit with the most advanced ultrasound equipment is a crucial step in allowing our team to deliver the best care to mothers and their high-risk babies," said Dr. Greg Ryan, Director of the Fetal Medicine Program at Mount Sinai. "Due to the high percentage of high-risk pregnancies seen at Mount Sinai each year, this equipment is essential for the early detection and treatment of a range of fetal complications."

The ultrasound technology will also open the door to groundbreaking research initiatives that will ultimately enhance the quality of care Mount Sinai is able to provide to these, our most fragile patients, explained Dr. Ryan.

"As a leading-edge facility in the care of mothers and infants, Mount Sinai Hospital embraces new technology and innovation," said Joseph Mapa, President and CEO of Mount Sinai Hospital.

"The ongoing support of our donor community, including partner organizations like National Bank and National Bank Financial, helps us maintain our ability to provide the best care possible to all who come to us for care."

The 3D ultrasound unit will be housed in the Fetal Medicine Unit, part of Mount Sinai's internationally recognized Women's and Infants' Health Centre of Excellence. This unit is one of only a handful in North America that can offer such an extensive range of fetal interventions in complicated pregnancies.

"With National Bank's interest in health care and National Bank Financial's leadership in childhood development, we believe this is an excellent collaboration. We want to acknowledge the leadership of Lawrence Bloomberg, one of our founding CEOs and the Chair of the hospital in initiating this partnership. Our contribution will help the many high-risk mothers and babies who come to Mount Sinai," said Brian Davis, Executive Vice President, Corporate Development and Governance, National Bank Financial. "We are delighted to contribute to the excellent care provided at the Hospital."
