National Breastfeeding Awareness Week-Can You Breastfeed After Breast Enlargement Surgery?

LEEDS, UNITED KINGDOM--(Marketwire - June 24, 2010) - This week (June 21 – June 27th 2010) is Breastfeeding Awareness week, a week dedicated to raising awareness of the advantages of breastfeeding and to give support and advice about breastfeeding. One frequently asked question on the "Ask an Expert" section on the MYA Cosmetic Surgery website is whether it is possible to breastfeed after you have had a breast enlargement and whether it is safe to do so.

The answer is yes. In the majority of cases breastfeeding after a breast enlargement is possible and safe. MYA use high quality cohesive silicone gel breast implants manufactured by Allergan. These are the latest technology implants and in the extremely rare case of the implant rupturing, no silicone gel would be absorbed into the body.

The likelihood of being able to breast feed depends mainly on where the surgeon places the implant and where he makes the incision. The most common place that MYA surgeons use to insert the implant is through an incision in the natural crease line under the breast. This is the best option for breastfeeding because it doesn't disturb the milk ducts. It is only when the incision is made around the edge of the nipple that it can disrupt or affect the milk ducts, however this is quite rare.

Having breast implants may affect the amount of milk normally produced, but despite this, the implants won't have a detrimental effect and are entirely safe for the baby. Milk production is most commonly affected when a very large implant is inserted as in order for the milk ducts to function properly they need space to expand and contract. Your MYA surgeon will always advise what size implant is most appropriate for you, so this should not be an issue.

Our Medical Director, Mr Nazar Kazzazi who is a consultant breast surgeon with a special interest in breast reconstruction and cosmetic surgery, believes that breastfeeding is one of the important factors in reducing the incidence of breast cancer and he strongly recommends it.

"When it comes to the relationship between the implants and breastfeeding, silicone breast implants like the ones MYA use are totally safe for pregnant women and they do not significantly interfere with breastfeeding, especially when placed behind the muscle."

He also adds, "There is no scientific evidence that breast implants have any adverse effects on the health of the breastfed child. However, if you are thinking of having a breast enlargement after childbirth and you are breastfeeding, you need to wait approximately 3 months to allow time for lactational changes to settle and for your breast to resume its usual shape before having breast implant surgery."
