National Defence: Media Advisory-Advance Party Leaves
Canada for Sri Lanka

TORONTO, ONTARIO--(CCNMatthews - Jan. 4, 2005) - A group of 16 Canadian
soldiers will be leaving Canada tonight at 1900 hrs from Terminal 1 and
3 of the Pearson International Airport (PIA). These soldiers are heading
for the region of Ampara, Sri Lanka. Journalists who wish to interview
them are welcome to go to terminal 1 at 1600 hrs.

All are members of the Disaster Assistance Response Team (DART).

The DART will be deployed commencing Thursday, January 6 and will begin
partial operations immediately upon arrival in Ampara and will be in
full operation as soon as possible.

The DART serves four critical needs in emergencies, namely:

- primary medical care;

- production of safe drinking water;

- a limited specialist engineer capability; and

- a command and control structure that allows for effective
communications between the DART, the host nation, and the other agencies
involved in the relief effort, including international organizations,
non-governmental organizations and UN aid agencies.

The vast majority of the soldiers who will be involved in this upcoming
operation are part of Land Force Central Area, the Army of Ontario. In
addition to this deployment, approximately 1,000 troops are currently
preparing to deploy next month in Kabul, Afghanistan. As well,
approximately 40 soldiers will leave in the coming weeks for Bosnia.
