National Engineers Week Celebration at Con Edison

NEW YORK, NY--(Marketwire - February 12, 2010) - Behind every Broadway marquee, New York operating room, corporate headquarters, airport or stadium, a Con Edison engineer quietly designs and monitors the electric, gas and steam systems.

During National Engineers Week, February 14 to 20, the company salutes its 1,000 engineers -- nearly one in seven employees.

Part of the company's celebration, "Engineers Make a World of Difference," features the Edison Engineering Society's showcase of new engineering projects on display Wednesday, February 17 at 4 Irving Place, from 4:30 p.m. to 6:30 p.m. Featured projects range from the modernization of the electric distribution system to the Long Island-NYC offshore wind project.

"From the neighborhood pizzeria to corporate headquarters, the differences Con Edison engineers make for New Yorkers are felt 24-7," said Craig S. Ivey, president of Con Edison. "The reliable delivery of electricity, gas and steam services enables comfort, convenience and commerce for our customers, while new technologies being developed will enhance our lives, and our planet, even more."

Company engineers also are developing the best ways to integrate various smart grid technologies into the New York City electric grid. They include using company developed equipment and sophisticated communications technology to identify problems on the grid and fix them faster. Con Edison is also working with the City University of New York to study how solar energy on a large scale can be integrated into the electric grid.

Con Edison is a subsidiary of Consolidated Edison, Inc. (NYSE: ED), one of the nation's largest investor-owned energy companies, with approximately $13 billion in annual revenues and $34 billion in assets. The utility provides electric, gas and steam service to more than 3 million customers in New York City and Westchester County, New York.

Con Edison's commitment to environmental responsibility has been recognized by the global Carbon Disclosure Project (CDP), Innovest Strategic Value Advisors, the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency, the U.S. Department of Energy and other organizations.
