Natural Resources Canada: Minister Raitt Celebrates National Forest Week

OTTAWA, ONTARIO--(Marketwire - Sept. 21, 2009) - National Forest Week is an opportunity for all Canadians to reflect on the natural beauty of our forests and their vital contribution to our prosperity and well-being. Today, the Honourable Lisa Raitt, Minister of Natural Resources, encouraged Canadians to celebrate National Forest Week from September 20 to 26.

The theme of this year's celebrations - Canada's Forests: Strong Roots, Green Shoots - focuses on the importance of innovation and entrepreneurial activity for Canada's forest sector.

"During National Forest Week, I encourage Canadians to enjoy the many benefits our forests offer," said Minister Raitt. "Our Government is working with Canada's forest industry to address economic challenges and strengthen its global competitiveness, while building upon this sector's world-class record."

The Government of Canada is working with all stakeholders - industry, governments, researchers and communities - to strengthen the long-term competitiveness and sustainability of Canada's forest sector through the development of innovative products, technologies and forest management practices.

National Forest Week originated as Forest Fire Prevention Week in 1926 and is observed annually during the last week of September. Renamed in 1967, this week of celebrations now encompasses the many different human and environmental aspects of Canada's forest resources.
