Naval Centennial Flag to Raise January 2010

OTTAWA, ONTARIO--(Marketwire - Dec. 29, 2009) - On the first of January 2010, HMC ships and shore establishments will mark the beginning of the Canadian Navy's centennial year by raising a flag adorned with the centennial identifier. The flag is authorized to be flown at naval establishments and appropriately displayed from January 1 through the Navy's Centennial Year.

The flag will assist the Canadian Naval Centennial Project's goal of renewing awareness amongst Canadians of the navy and its contributions to Canada during a century of service. The Centennial project will also highlight the role the navy currently plays in a maritime nation such as Canada.

The flag stands as a symbol of respect that reflects the desire to honour the past, celebrate Canadian Navy achievements and recognize the navy's obligation to Canada.

On 4 May 2010, the Canadian Navy will celebrate its 100th anniversary. The centennial will be a momentous milestone in both the navy's and Canada's history.

Events and activities to celebrate the navy's centennial are taking place across the country throughout the year. Canadians are encouraged to become involved in the centennial of our nation's navy by joining in any of the public celebrations.
