New Brunswick Housing Starts in July

MONCTON NB, Aug. 11 - According to Canada Mortgage and Housing Corporation's (CMHC's) preliminary data(1) released today for urban centres in New Brunswick, there were 321 total housing starts last month, compared with 376 in July 2008.

With a total of 187 units, single starts increased by two per cent compared to July of last year while multiple starts declined by 30 per cent, with 134 starts in July 2009 compared to 192 a year ago.

"A significant decline in multiple starts in the Greater Moncton and Saint John areas, particularly apartment starts, led to lower total starts in provincial urban centres in July," said Claude Gautreau, CMHC's senior market analyst for New Brunswick. "In contrast, multiple starts were significantly higher in Fredericton last month compared to the same period last year," added Gautreau.

In urban centres across Canada, total housing starts in July were down 32 per cent to 10,570 units compared to last year's monthly total of 15,456. Single-detached starts were down 28 per cent to 5,465 units, while multiple starts were down 35 per cent in July to 5,105 units compared to 7,603 units during the same period last year. In the Atlantic region, 858 new units were started in July compared to 1,144 units in July of last year.

As Canada's national housing agency, CMHC draws on more than 60 years of experience to help Canadians access a variety of quality, environmentally sustainable, and affordable homes - homes that will continue to create vibrant and healthy communities and cities across the country.
