New Jersey After 3 Named Lead Agency for Semester of Service and Global Youth Service Day 2010

Youth Service America Selected New Jersey After 3 for Fourth Consecutive Year

NEW BRUNSWICK, NJ--(Marketwire - October 27, 2009) - New Jersey After 3, a statewide network of afterschool programs dedicated to expanding learning time for thousands of New Jersey's youth, was selected by Youth Service America (YSA) to be the lead agency in New Jersey for the 2010 Semester of Service and Global Youth Service Day. This marks the fourth year New Jersey After 3 was awarded this distinction for Global Youth Service Day, and the first year selected as a Semester of Service lead agency. Semester of Service encourages youth to develop a semester-long service-learning project where students identify and work to solve problems in their communities. The "semester" launches on Martin Luther King, Jr. Day of Service (January 18, 2010) and culminates on Global Youth Service Day (April 23 - 25, 2010) with student demonstrations and projects across the nation. New Jersey After 3 will serve to coordinate these activities across the state.

Through Semester of Service, New Jersey After 3 will engage more than 4,500 students and 2,000 family and community members from within their network to participate in the "Speak Out & Listen Up" themed service projects. "Speak Out & Listen Up" is a 12 week long curriculum that will allow youth to explore their voices while assisting in creating communities that support and celebrate literacy development, hope and peace. The projects will ask student to think about ways they can promote peace and positive change through communication in their schools, afterschool programs and surrounding communities. Significant to the celebration is the opportunity for youth to identify local issues and barriers, and make use of a public platform for the purposes of promoting hope, peace and literacy.

"Speak Out & Listen Up" curriculum kits will be disseminated to programs across New Jersey After 3's statewide afterschool program network. The curriculum kits will have three grade-appropriate versions: Kindergarten to 2nd grade, 3rd to 5th grade, and 6th to 8th grade.

"New Jersey After 3 has placed a priority on engaging youth in service and service learning activities, as we recognize the transformative power that service can have on youth. With so much attention being shined on community service projects this month (i.e. EIF's iParticipate, Lights on Afterschool, etc.) New Jersey After 3 is thrilled that Youth Service America has recognized our work," stated Cari Tarica, Director of Content & Special Initiatives with New Jersey After 3. "We are incredibly honored to serve as one of the first lead agencies in Youth Service America's Semester of Service. We are very proud of the curriculum that we developed, and look forward to the months ahead when thousands of afterschool students will be engaged in these meaningful service learning projects."
