New MailMarshal Release Provides Anti-Spam Detection That Turns Off Spam Instantly

MailMarshal SMTP 6.4 Consistently Delivers Over 99.5% Spam Detection With Marshal's Strongest Ever Anti-Spam Engine

ATLANTA, GA--(Marketwire - January 15, 2008) - Integrated email and Internet content provider Marshal today announced the availability of MailMarshal SMTP 6.4, the newest release of its email security and management gateway, powered by an extended Defense-in-Depth Anti-Spam Engine that blocks in excess of 99.5% spam consistently.

Significant enhancements in this new release include the addition of SpamProfiler, a new layer in the anti-spam engine; IP reputation services support with automatic adaptive whitelisting; a flexible and customizable spam quarantine management application; live RSS notifications within the MailMarshal console; improved pornographic image detection; message routing capabilities to support virtually any message routing requirements; and centralized array upgrades to simplify upgrades for multi-server environments.

SpamProfiler, which incorporates Cloudmark's Authority technology, is a new layer of spam protection added to MailMarshal's Defense-in-Depth Anti-Spam Engine. SpamProfiler increases message throughput, helps to maintain consistently high spam detection rates and provides extended detection for foreign language spam. It uses sophisticated algorithms to create spam signatures that are used to identify instantly any message that resembles known spam. SpamProfiler receives signature updates as frequently as every ten minutes and catches foreign language spam, including Japanese, German, Dutch, Italian, French, Russian, Chinese, Spanish and many more. SpamProfiler accurately identifies and blocks the bulk of spam as it is being received, maximizing message throughput and saving server resources.

MailMarshal 6.4 includes IP reputation services support as another way to block spam effectively. To minimize the risk of false positives, MailMarshal 6.4 couples IP reputation services with a unique Adaptive Whitelist feature that automatically creates and maintains lists of trusted and legitimate email senders. This helps to ensure that critical messages from trusted sources, such as customers, suppliers and partners, are not accidentally blocked as spam if the senders are inadvertently listed as spammers on an IP reputation or real-time blacklists.

"IP Reputation services and real-time blacklists are an excellent way to block spam, but occasionally they blacklist a legitimate company," said Bradley Anstis, vice president of Products for Marshal. "Our unique and automatic Adaptive Whitelist system ensures that if a legitimate sender has been blacklisted the message will still be delivered. However, to ensure protection, such emails are not automatically sent to the recipient until they pass through the additional layers of defense in Marshal's Defense-in-Depth Anti-Spam Engine."

MailMarshal SMTP 6.4 Spam Quarantine Management application features significant end-user customization and flexibility for network administrators. The new and more intuitive interface reduces training requirements and provides flexibility for administrators to enable or disable safe sender lists, block lists, review end-user settings and delete obsolete users.

Defense-in-Depth Anti-Spam Engine

The Marshal Defense-in-Depth Anti-Spam Engine is comprised of five different layers of spam filters that build upon each other to provide improved protection and accuracy instantly, straight out of the box. Each layer identifies a large amount of spam in its own right and each specializes in detecting different varieties of spam. The cumulative effect delivers anti-spam performance that is greater than the sum of its parts. MailMarshal SMTP 6.4 consistently delivers in excess of 99.5% spam detection with a false positive rate of less than 0.001%.

"Developing consistently effective anti-spam technology is not easy because new forms of spam are constantly appearing. Since spam first appeared, Marshal has purposefully and methodically configured the best technologies and techniques into a unique, multilayered, sequential system that provides sustainable anti-spam defense that not only blocks known spam formats but also adapts to detect new forms of spam as they appear," explained Anstis.

Five layers of technologies and techniques work in sequence, each layer building upon the other, to provide effective anti-spam and anti-phishing protection and accuracy.

-- IP Reputation Services support and real-time Blacklists (RBL) -- This
is applied to spam at the SMTP Receiver layer and can reject as much as 80%
of all spam upfront and on the fly before it enters the gateway perimeter.
This layer integrates automatic Adaptive Whitelist technology to minimize
    the risk of false positives.
-- SpamProfiler -- This new layer uses intelligent message fingerprinting
techniques and sophisticated algorithms to detect spam upfront quickly to
save server resources for more in-depth analysis of other messages. These
signatures quickly and accurately identify if an email message resembles
known spam. SpamProfiler receives signature updates from Marshal as
    frequently as every ten minutes.
-- SpamCensor -- SpamCensor uses an intelligent, heuristic approach to
sort though messages that have passed the first two layers. These will
typically be unusual spam messages or new variations of spam that have not
    previously been encountered.
-- URLCensor -- This layer extracts the URL links embedded in messages
and performs DNS lookups against lists of known websites or URLs associated
    with spam.
-- Custom Policies -- This layer applies the customer's own policies,
such as end user-defined blacklists, and CountryCensor, which can block
    messages from entire countries.

"Marshal's goal is to keep customers virtually spam free," said Anstis. "MailMarshal SMTP 6.4 is the strongest anti-spam solution available."
