New Monument marks 25th Anniversary of Marathon of Hope

City of St. John's hosts Fox Family with day long celebration Tuesday, April 12. New book and monument to be unveiled. Attention: Assignment Editor, Books Editor, City Editor, Lifestyle Editor, News Editor ST. JOHN'S, NEWFOUNDLAND LABRADOR--(CCNMatthews - April 6, 2005) - On Tuesday, April 12, a new monument will be unveiled where Terry Fox dipped his foot in St. John's harbour to begin his heroic cross Canada run 25 years earlier. The unveiling will be part of a daylong celebration hosted by the City of St. John's marking the 25th Anniversary of the Marathon of Hope. The day will also see the official launch of author Douglas Coupland's new pictorial book, "Terry".

The Fox family and Terry's good friend and Marathon of Hope companion Doug Alward will join Mayor Andy Wells in unveiling the classic slate monument. Until recently, a simple white post was all that marked the spot.

A number of special guests will be in attendance including those who were on hand to see Terry off on that cold rainy day twenty-five years ago. Bea Courtney will be one of the special guests in attendance. Bea, as a member of the Jaycees, greeted Terry and Doug at the St. John's airport and welcomed them into her home the night before Terry started the Marathon of Hope.

"April 12th will be a humbling and moving experience for us all as we attempt to comprehend the magnitude of Terry's quest 25 years earlier" says Darrell Fox, National Director of The Terry Fox Foundation. "We look forward to sharing this day with Doug Alward and the community of St. John's as we acknowledge all those that have perpetuated Terry's ever growing legacy."

Immediately following the unveiling, the official ceremony will move to the Battery Hotel and will include greetings from the City of St. John's and the Province of Newfoundland and Labrador. The day will be filled with musical entertainment and the Royal Canadian Mint will be hosting a ceremonial coin exchange of the new 'Terry' one-dollar coin.
