A new state-of-the-art manufacturing facility that will be the sole supplier of hydropower generator coils to all the company's operations around the world opens today in Mississauga. The Centre of Excellence for coil manufacturing is a multi-million dollar investment for Voith Hydro.

The new Voith Hydro coil production and servicing facility was officially opened today by Mayor Hazel McCallion of Mississauga and Holger Raasch, Consul General of the Federal Republic of Germany at Mississauga's Sheridan Science and Technology Park.

"We saw an opportunity to create, for our operations all over the world, a centre of excellence for coils, and we made a multi-million dollar investment, installing state-of-the-art equipment," said Bill Malus, Chief Operating Officer for Voith Hydro Mississauga. "This new more compact equipment allows us to expand our After Market Services business in the same building. The new coil production facility along with the growth of our After Market Services business will help secure current jobs and increase our workforce in the future," he added.

Voith Hydro, an international company with Canadian headquarters in Brossard, Quebec, is a world leader in the manufacture of hydropower generators, turbines and a range of related electrical and mechanical equipment, such as coils. Created as a joint venture of Voith (65%) and Siemens (35%) in 2000, the holding company is based in Voith's corporate headquarters in Heidenheim, Germany.

Over the past 35 years, the company's Mississauga plant has developed expertise in the manufacturing of coils, which requires sophisticated engineering design, specific handcrafting skills, and proven, reliable processes. Coils are at the heart of a hydropower generator, creating the electromagnetic field needed for electricity production.

"As Mayor of the City of Mississauga, I am delighted that Voith Hydro is located in the Sheridan Science and Technology Park. Voith's reputation for excellence and innovation greatly enhances our City's reputation for attracting the best and brightest companies," said Mayor McCallion.

Voith Hydro's investment helps secure manufacturing jobs in Ontario and Canada, as well as jobs in the field of engineering, drafting, purchasing, and finance.

"Voith Hydro is committed to excellence and innovation in hydropower because we believe in the vital role that clean and renewable hydropower plays in protecting our environment and will play in the future of the world," added Denys Turcotte, President and Chief Executive Officer of Voith Hydro Canada.
