New PAN Manager(R) Software by Egenera(R) for Converged Infrastructure and Unified Computing Immediately Available

Converged Infrastructure Management Solution Delivers Simplified Vendor-Neutral, Enterprise-Grade High Availability, Disaster Recovery and Infrastructure-as-a-Service Capabilities

LAS VEGAS, NV--(Marketwire - April 26, 2010) -  Interop Las Vegas 2010 -- Egenera today announced the immediate availability of PAN Manager® 6.0 Software by Egenera®, the only open-standards, cross-platform, software-based solution for converged infrastructures. Advances in PAN Manager 6.0 include new functionality for Dell™ platforms including larger failover domain sizes as well as support for increased fabric, Ethernet and FibreChannel speeds.

PAN Manager 6.0 now allows cross-enclosure converged fabrics for up to three Dell blade chassis and 48-blade converged domains designed to support multiple physical applications and/or thousands of VMs on a single floor tile, all with completely integrated n+1 High Availability (HA) as well as n+1 Disaster Recovery (DR). On the Dell platform, the converged infrastructure software also now supports 10Gbps Ethernet connections, converged fabric speeds up to 40Gbps, and FibreChannel speeds of 8Gbps. The software is also simpler to install, typically configured and up-and-running within one day.

About Egenera and PAN Manager
PAN Manager Software is designed for standard x86 server blades and standard Ethernet components, but without need for additional network interface cards (NICs) or host bus adapters (HBAs). Integrated technologies include virtualized I/O, converged networking, virtual switching and virtual load balancing -- which together create flexibly configured infrastructure that can be dynamically allocated to meet large-scale data center demands for virtualization, HA and DR.

Egenera created the first converged infrastructure systems based on PAN Manager Software in 2001. Today, more than 1,400 instances of PAN Manager run in data centers across the globe on both Egenera BladeFrame® and Dell™ PowerEdge™servers. Additional platforms are expected soon.

PAN Manager 6.0 simplifies data center infrastructure and operations and management by:

  • Eliminating costly I/O and networking components such as NICs, HBAs and cables
  • Eliminating the requirement of costly networking transports such as FibreChannel-over-Ethernet (FCoE) or InfiniBand
  • Simplifying unified management of physical, virtual and mixed environments using a single console
  • Integrating n+1 HA and n+1 DR for physical, virtual and mixed infrastructure -- removing the need for siloed physical and virtual clustering products
  • Enabling server profile definitions, policy-based provisioning, and event management that automatically adjusts to changing demand -- all with a single GUI

Typical customer use-cases for PAN Manager include:

  • Uninterrupted running of business-critical software such as enterprise resource planning, financial systems and supply chain management applications
  • Highly reliable hardware platforms for densely virtualized host clusters, such as virtual desktop environments
  • Cloud Infrastructure-as-a-Service foundations requiring elastic capacity and self-healing HA and DR properties

The new software has significant simplification, price/performance, and operational advantages over vendor-specific hardware alternatives such as HP Matrix and Cisco UCS solutions, which can require entirely new networking infrastructure, blade management hardware, and multiple third-party software components to deliver equivalent HA and DR functionality. In contrast, Egenera rejects such hardware lock-in. The company is committed to software-based solutions, to additional multi-platform PAN Manager support, and to open standards, enabling customers to use their existing standard IT infrastructure when opting for converged infrastructures.

Analyst Quote
Jim Frey, Research Director, Enterprise Management Associates:

"To realize the full potential value of converging hardware in infrastructure, there must be a facility for unified management of that infrastructure. EMA defines this as having a common configuration tool, converged network management, process and workflow management, and system availability controls. PAN Manager Software is a great example of a solution which meets these requirements. The software integrates change and configuration management across all domains. And Egenera's commitment to open standards is demonstrated in PAN Manager's compatibility with hardware from other manufacturers. They are the only vendor we're aware today that has delivered unified cross-domain management that is also hardware neutral, all within a single management product."

Executive Quotes
Ken Oestreich, vice president marketing, Egenera:

"Today's typical infrastructure includes complex I/O, networking, and switching, and is largely physical, static, and manually configured. In the manner that OS virtualization is revolutionizing cost structures in the software domain, converged infrastructure is now revolutionizing cost structures in the infrastructure domain -- the forgotten half of the data center. Plus, converging management tools radically simplifies operations such as providing application availability."

Pete Manca, president and CEO, Egenera:

"Unified computing is changing the way IT leadership thinks about the data center. Egenera has been the standards bearer for converged IT operations and management since our inception 10 years ago. PAN Manager Software is the key component of Egenera's mission to provide customers with simpler, agile data center solutions by providing an easy-to-use, yet powerful and flexible converged infrastructure across multiple platforms."
