New York Family Awarded K of C's International Family of the Year Award

Doctor and family members recognized for charitable and educational initiatives

QUEBEC CITY, CANADA--(Marketwire - Aug. 6, 2008) - A Knight of Columbus and his family from Goshen, N.Y., have received the organization's 2008 International Family of the Year Award. The honor was presented to Dr. Mario Loomis, a member of St. John's Council 1106, and his family at the Knights of Columbus Supreme Convention here today.

A plastic surgeon, Dr. Loomis participates in Light of the World Charities, a Catholic humanitarian program providing medical care for the poor and sick in third world countries to help alleviate poverty and physical suffering. Dr. Loomis volunteers to correct cleft palate deformities in children.

He and his wife, Donna, are cofounders of a Catholic teen support program called "A Drop of Clear Water." The initiative stresses commitments to prayer, chastity and charity. Donna is active in Catholic home schooling and, with her husband, promotes natural family planning and sexual morality.

The couple has four children: Joseph (18), Rebecca (15), Gabriel (7) and Teresa (5). Joseph is active in the Columbian Squire program and created a video presentation for teens considering a religious vocation.

Second place in Family of the Year category went to the Tuan Huynh family of Fr. Donald Schumaker Council 6772 in Minneapolis, Minn.
