New York Welcomes Spring

Celebrate the Season With Festivals and Events Near New York Hotels

NEW YORK, NY--(Marketwire - April 8, 2010) -  In New York, springtime temperatures -- and the promise of outdoor events, festivals and plenty of fun in the sun -- have arrived. For those staying at New York hotels, it's also the perfect season to experience the city like a local, which is why Marriott International, Inc. has created a quick and easy guide to some of New York City's top seasonal attractions.

Depending on when you find yourself in "the Big Apple," the events and activities available will change, but if you happen to be planning a New York hotel stay during one of the events below, count yourself lucky and take full advantage of the sights and sounds of spring.

  • Coney Island. From Easter to Labor Day, Coney Island is open -- and offers old-fashioned fun as only New York City can. With death-defying carnival rides, a legendary circus and sideshow, plus midway games and all the hotdogs and boardwalk food you can eat, this one-of-a-kind destination is a must-see for families and grownups alike. Ask your New York hotel's concierge for the park's hours of operation, as they are adjusted seasonally.
  • South Street Seaport & Pier 17. Although it's open all year long, spring and summer are particularly nice at South Street Seaport and Pier 17. Here you can shop, dine al fresco, take a ferry ride or grab an ice cream cone and watch some of the city's best street performers.
  • Cherry Blossom Festival at the Brooklyn Botanical Garden. Throughout April and May, the cherry trees at the Brooklyn Botanical Garden welcome visitors with soft pink flowers and the promise of warmer days ahead. To complement the festival, the garden will also host the Sakura Matsuri festival on May 1st and 2nd, which celebrates the cherry blossoms and Japanese culture with more than 60 events and performances, including contemporary and traditional Japanese music and dance, taiko drumming, ikebana flower arranging, DJs, tea ceremonies and more.
  • Fleet Week. Guests at New York hotels during Fleet Week are in for a treat. During this week-long celebration of the U.S. Navy, which takes place around Memorial Day, approximately 15 U.S. Navy, foreign warships and Coast Guard vessels will anchor in and around the city. During this time, visitors can tour some of the ships, watch military demonstrations and cheer on the crews as they go head-to-head in a variety of competitions. Ask your hotel's concierge for details.

Throughout the season, new festivals and activities will be added to the city's calendar of events, so check with your New York hotel's concierge to find the latest ways to celebrate spring. For more information, visit
