Local dragon boaters break out their paddles to protect Asian bears

Attention: Assignment Editor, Environment Editor, News Editor, Photo Editor, World News Editor VANCOUVER, BC, MEDIA ADVISORY--(Marketwire - June 3, 2007) -
What: A group of 100 local athletes, the Synergy Dragon Boat Racing team, will be sporting team uniforms during the upcoming Alcan Dragon Boat Festival bearing a bear paw emblem with a slogan that reads in Chinese and English: "Protect Asian bears. Don't use bear bile." Synergy is one of several local groups supporting the World Society for the Protection of Animals' campaign to end bear farming in Asia and discourage consumption of bear bile, an ingredient in some Traditional Asian Medicines. WSPA will announce plans to campaign against bear bile use during the upcoming Alcan Dragon Boat Festival. Ms. Mary Lo, host of Fairchild TV and Fairchild Radio, and Mr. Jacky Tse, President of the Chinese Entrepreneurs Society of Canada, will register their support for the campaign by signing a giant fabric 'petition' scroll along with representatives of Synergy Dragon Boat Racing.

When: Monday, June 4, at 11:00 am PDT

Why: WSPA is working in partnership with the Calvin Ayre Foundation to protect bears by ending bear farming in Asia. There are at least 12,000 bears suffering on farms in Vietnam, Korea and China as their bile is used as an ingredient in Traditional Asian Medicine. Most are held captive in small cages, some no more than 1 m x 1 m x 2 m, about the size of a telephone booth turned on its side. /For further information:
