TORONTO, ONTARIO, FILM/TV AWARDS ANNOUNCEMENT--(Marketwire - April 13, 2010) - Nominations for Canada's fourth annual Constellation Awards, honouring excellence in Science Fiction film and television, were announced last week in nine categories. All nominees were determined by the popular vote of the Canadian viewing public. Nominees were revealed in a televised announcement on G4 Canada's "EP Daily" on April 6th, 2010.
With its six nominations, the CTV co-production "Defying Gravity" was the only television show to make the ballot in every category for which it was eligible - dominating nominations despite its cancellation and disappointing ratings. Nominations include nods to Ron Livingstone and Laura Harris in the acting categories, as well as nominations for Best Series, Best Script, and Best Technical Accomplishment.
"This highlights why awards such as these are important," notes Andrew Gurudata, chairman of the Constellation Awards. "The ratings may not have reflected it, but clearly science fiction fans felt passionate about the show, and wanted to honour the people behind it with these nominations."
The Canadian series "Sanctuary" also had a strong showing in the television categories, picking up six nominations, while other television shows with multiple nominations include "Supernatural", "Doctor Who", and newcomers "FlashForward" and the CBC's "Being Erica".
In the film categories, popular actress Zoe Saldana is nominated twice in the female acting category for her performances in the blockbuster movies "Avatar" and "Star Trek". "Star Trek" in fact dominated the film categories, picking up a total of five nominations. Other films with multiple nominations this year include "District 9", "Moon" and "Watchmen".
Voting in the awards is now open to the public. The voting deadline is June 7th, 2010. Winners will be announced at an awards ceremony on July 17th, 2010 in Toronto. To see a complete list of nominees and to learn more about how to vote, please visit: http://constellations.tcon.ca
