One of Canada's leading financial institutions, Northern Credit Union, announced today the winners of an online contest that awarded $5,000 to four lucky local women. The contest was part of Northern Credit Union's launch of Northern Purse Strings, a social networking site created specifically to help women better manage their finances.

The winners were Rosemary Yrcha, Doreen Armstrong and Janis Bradshaw of Sudbury and Linda Desjardins of Sault Ste. Marie. They are all members of Purse Strings' Scotties Tournament of Hearts group and will share the $5,000 prize ($1,250 a person). The social networking community has already attracted 295 women in its opening days.

"We're glad to see our online community interacting with such great enthusiasm," said Al Suraci CEO of Northern Credit Union. "Similar to the community building we do in our branches, Purse Strings builds communities of women online who share common interests, financial concerns and the desire for more information that comes from open dialogue. Women are often the CFO's of their family budget and Purse Strings is a great new tool to help guide their decision making."

Purse Strings was launched to create an online community support system amongst a group of friends looking to achieve a series of financial goals. This starts by bringing together a group of four friends, each of whom invites another friend. Once the Purse String group is set, the members meet once a month to discuss their finances and share advice. The group is then registered online and becomes part of a virtual community of people looking to successfully manage their personal finances.

The name Purse Strings was selected to imply control. "Getting control over managing money and financial health will lead to more life control in the long-term," said Suraci. In addition to using members as a support system, each group has access to Northern Credit Union financial experts to help with tougher questions.

Serving 22 communities stretching along the Canadian Shield in northern and eastern Ontario, Northern Credit Union is a full-service, locally-operated financial institution offering personal and commercial banking and financial planning expertise to over 48,000 member shareholders.
