Northern Rock Staff Demonstrate Outside Shareholder Meeting

9am Tuesday 15th January 2008 Metro Radio Arena, Arena Way, Newcastle, upon Tyne, NE4 7NA

LONDON, UNITED KINGDOM--(Marketwire - Jan. 9, 2008) -

PHOTO OPPORTUNITY AND CALLING NOTICE

Employees of Northern Rock will hold a demonstration outside the bank's Extraordinary General Meeting (EGM) in Newcastle on Tuesday 15th January. Staff will wear t-shirts with slogans saying: "We are Northern Rock" in a bid to remind shareholders that the voice of employees must not be ignored.

Members of Unite the Union will hand out leaflets to shareholders as part of their campaign to make their voices heard. Unite recently launched a 'Charter for Northern Rock and Future Stakeholders' which sets out the union's expectations for Northern Rock management and any future stakeholder in the bank. Unite will urge shareholders to reject the resolutions proposed by RAB Capital and SRM Global, which would severely restrict the ability of the bank's Board to raise new share capital.

Employees of the bank will demonstrate to show that they are committed to the organisation and will continue to work hard to protect the future of the bank. The crisis, which hit Northern Rock in September, has resulted in a great deal of uncertainty and insecurity for Unite members.

Unite will reiterate the contents of the Unite Charter setting out:

1. Recognition of Unite as a stakeholder in Northern Rock
2. To ensure the long term job security for the employees of Northern Rock
3. To protect and improve the terms of employment for employees
4. To protect the existing pension arrangements
5. To continue the work of the Northern Rock Foundation
6. To retain Northern Rock as a UK listed company
