Northern Rock Staff Make Voice Heard at Shareholder Meeting

LONDON, UNITED KINGDOM--(Marketwire - Jan. 14, 2008) -

News and picture desks: NE media and City and Business desks

Employees of Northern Rock will hold a demonstration tomorrow (Tuesday 15th January) outside the bank's Extraordinary General Meeting (EGM) in Newcastle.

Staff will be wearing t-shirts with slogans saying: "We are Northern Rock" to remind shareholders that the voice of employees must not be ignored.

Graham Goddard, Unite Deputy General Secretary, says:

"Along with the loyal customers, employees of Northern Rock are the life-blood of the bank. Without the continuous dedication of these employees throughout the current crisis there would be no viable business for shareholders to discuss at their meeting.

"Months of unremitting speculation about the future of Northern Rock has left long-serving employees feeling insecure about their jobs in an organisation they are very faithful to. Unite is urging shareholders to hear the concerns of staff and consider the Unite Charter on the future of Northern Rock."

Members of Unite the Union will hand out leaflets to shareholders to make their priorities clear. The 'Charter for Northern Rock and Future Stakeholders' sets out the union's expectations for Northern Rock management and any future stakeholder in the bank. Unite will urge shareholders to reject the resolutions proposed by RAB Capital and SRM Global, which would severely restrict the ability of the bank's Board to raise new share capital.

Unite will reiterate the contents of the Unite Charter setting out:

1. Recognition of Unite as a stakeholder in Northern Rock

2. To ensure the long term job security for the employees of Northern Rock

3. To protect and improve the terms of employment for employees

4. To protect the existing pension arrangements

5. To continue the work of the Northern Rock Foundation

6. To retain Northern Rock as a UK listed company
