Northern Star Mining Corporation: Midway Project Drill Results

VANCOUVER, BRITISH COLUMBIA--(CCNMatthews - Jan. 8, 2007) - Northern Star Mining Corp. (TSX VENTURE:NSM) is pleased to announce final results from its deep drill program carried out its wholly owned Midway project, located 16 kilometers west of Val-d'Or Quebec.

The results confirm the discovery of two new gold bearing horizons at depth, that combined with the five zones previously announced from the shallower portion of this drill hole (see press release November 30, 2006), bring the total of new significant gold intercepts to seven from this hole.

Drill results show:

From To Length Gold Gold
Hole (ft) (ft) (ft) (g/t) (oz/t) Type

MGFD0601 6,200 6,210.9 10.9 17.9 0.522 gabbro

6,217.7 6,270 52.3 8.95 0.261 gabbro

-Samples were sent to ALS Chemex in Val-d'Or, Que., and were assayed using a 30-gram sample with fire assay finish. Pulps and rejects were recovered and returned for future check and verification purposes. Eugene Gauthier, PEng. (geol.), is the qualified person on the project.

Previously the Company had announced the following results from the initial, shallower portion of the drill hole (press release November 30, 2006).

From To Length Gold Gold
Hole (ft) (ft) (ft) g/t oz/t Type

MGFD0601 3,814.8 3,816.0 1.2 4.68 0.137 Gabbro

4,760.7 4,767.3 6.6 6.24 0.182 Gabbro
Including 4,764.0 4,767.3 3.0 11.75 0.343 Gabbro

4,826.1 4,843.5 17.4 9.61 0.281 Gabbro
Including 4,828.8 4,832.0 3.2 11.40 0.478 Gabbro
Including 4,832.8 4,835.0 3.2 27.80 0.811 Gabbro

4,882.5 4,892.9 6.3 1.57 0.046 Porphyry

5,743.8 5,747.7 3.9 2.52 0.074 Gabbro

The Company is very excited by these initial assay results as they have not only resulted in the discovery of seven new gold bearing horizons at depth, but have confirmed the continuity of the gold mineralization at considerable depths below that mined at the past producing Malartic Goldfields mine.

These results confirm the significant potential of the Midway project. Results from past drilling and the present drill hole show that the gold bearing horizons mined at Malartic Goldfields (2.0 millions ounces produced 1938-1960 M.R.N. 32 C/4) and those discovered during the Company's drill programs are open both laterally along strike and now to considerable depths which had never been explored beforehand.

The mineralization encountered in this drill hole appears identical in nature to that previously encountered during drilling and past mining activities on the Midway project.

The drill hole, approximately 8,000 feet long, is the deepest drill hole ever attempted and successfully completed in this area of the Cadillac Break, and attained a vertical true depth of some 5,300 feet.

The drill hole was designed to explore for new gold mineralized structures at significant depths below the deepest known gold mineralization on the project (Malartic Goldfields Mine 2,700 foot level).

Mineralization at the Midway project consists of gold associated with pyrite, with the gold occurring as very fine free gold particles in association with pyrite grains. The amount of gold appears as a direct function of the amount of pyrite.

Gold is contained in both porphyry type intrusive bodies, which may be controlling features of the mineralization, and within discrete lenses of gabbro, located adjacent and parallel to the porphyry bodies. The gabbro lenses exhibit classic en echelon structure both along strike and dip.

The presence of gold in the porphyry intrusive is also very significant, as to date, when it occurs, it is indicative of gold mineralization in the adjacent gabbro lenses.

Finally the drill hole was also designed to ascertain rock quality at these depths. Core examination has revealed that the rock quality is excellent, with average core recoveries exceeding 96 %.

The Company continues with its exploration of the Midway project, and further results will be announced as available.
