Norway House Health Services Hires Two New Executives

New team emphasizes ongoing good governance and strong partnerships

NORWAY HOUSE, MANITOBA--(Marketwire - April 12, 2010) - Norway House Health Services Inc. (NHHSI) is pleased to announce the appointment of Chief Executive Officer Deborah Schwartz, and Chief Nursing Officer, Sandra Dawson.

Deborah Schwartz, a Metis from Manitoba, was most recently employed as the Executive Director of the Aboriginal Healthy Living Branch of the BC Ministry of Healthy Living and Sport. She brings with her a wealth of knowledge and experience with health system transformation and played a lead role in developing the Tripartite First Nations Health Plan in BC. Schwartz said, "I am passionate about our culture, health and healing. This is an unprecedented time of change as we work to improve services for the people of Norway House and ultimately close the health and socioeconomic gaps between First Nations and other Manitobans. I am committed to building strong relationships and high performing, cooperative teams across communities, governments and sectors of society".

Sandra Dawson comes to NHHSI from Kelowna BC and will assume the role of Chief Nursing Officer at the Norway House Health Clinic. Her key accomplishments and areas of expertise include Nursing and Cross-Cultural Education, Certification in Emergency Management, and Quality Improvement and Assessment. Her most recent position was as Manager, Central Okanagan Education, Systems Support and Emergency Preparedness.

NHHSI Chairperson Marcel Balfour commented, "Both of these appointments are markers of the good governance processes that have been developed so far. Balfour, the former Chief of NHCN, was also the NHHSI Chairperson during his tenure as Chief. While he did not run in the recent March 2010 NHCN Election, he remains the NHHSI Chair. Mr. Balfour said, "The apolitical process of our Board Development is now complete. We have a full complement of Board members who are now no longer politicians. This means the environment is now free from political interference as we planned for over a year now."

Balfour added, "We have engaged highly experienced professionals and are encouraged and energized by the engagement of Ms Dawson and Ms Schwartz as we serve our common purpose to improve health services for all the people of Norway House. I look forward to working with our new appointees and fellow Board members as we now continue our work and seek to improve our hospital and health services".
