Novadaq’s SPY Imaging System Receives Recognition at Major Cardiac Surgery Conference

TORONTO, ONTARIO--(Marketwire - June 14, 2005) - Novadaq™ Technologies announced today that the SPY™ Intra-operative Imaging System, for use in the visual assessment of bypass grafts during cardiac surgery, was prominently featured during the 2005 International Society for Minimally Invasive Cardiothoracic Surgery (ISMICS) Meeting, held in New York, New York, June1-4, 2005. A presentation moderated by Nimesh Desai, MD comparing the ability of the SPY Intra-operative Imaging System and Transit Time Flow Measurement (TTF) to detect coronary artery bypass graft errors, was recognized as the top presentation in its category at the meeting. The presentation, A Randomized Comparison of Intra-operative Angiography and Transit-Time Flow Measurement to Detect Technical Errors in Coronary Artery Bypass Grafts, featured the results of a randomized clinical study of 338 bypass grafts in 106 eligible patients conducted at Sunnybrook and Women's Health Sciences Centre in Toronto, Canada. The study was designed to compare the ability of Novadaq's SPY Intra-operative Imaging System and TTF to detect technical errors during coronary artery bypass surgery, using traditional x-ray angiography as the gold standard. The study concluded that the SPY System was superior to TTF in its diagnostic accuracy as it identified 83.3% of technical errors, while TTF identified only 25% of all technical errors.

"Early graft failure is a known problem in up to 12% of patients undergoing coronary artery bypass surgery," said Dr. Desai. "Graft patency is the predominant predictor of long term survival following coronary bypass surgery, therefore the ability to visually assess graft patency in the operating room will enable surgeons to better assure quality outcomes for patients."

The SPY System was also featured at ISMICS during a live coronary artery bypass surgery demonstration performed by cardiac surgeon Dr. Nirav Patel at Lenox Hill Hospital in New York. The SPY System, which involves the intravascular administration of a fluorescent imaging agent and the visualization of the coronary arteries and grafts through exposure to a low laser light, was used to visually assess the quality of the bypass grafts during the surgery.

"In the past, we didn't know how often graft quality was less than perfect during bypass surgery, but now we can visually assess the graft and make corrections if necessary before the patient leaves the operating room," said Dr. Patel.

Novadaq began a strategic U.S. commercial launch of the SPY Intra-operative Imaging System in March after receiving clearance from the Food and Drug Administration (FDA) in late January 2005. Lenox Hill Hospital is the fifth highly recognized cardiac surgery center to adopt the SPY System for use during coronary artery bypass surgery. Four other cardiac surgery centers in the United States: Stanford, Medical City Dallas, Methodist Hospital in Houston and The Cleveland Clinic, are also using the SPY System.
