OMERS Launches New Investment Entity and Hires Top Corporate Lawyer as Head

TORONTO, ONTARIO--(Marketwire - Nov. 28, 2008) - The OMERS pension fund announced today that one of Canada's leading corporate finance lawyers will head up a new entity to invest in a select portfolio of private companies that have global reach.

Jacques Demers, a senior partner with Ogilvy Renault LLP in Toronto, will start as President and Chief Executive Officer of OMERS Strategic Investments effective January 1, 2009.

A graduate of Universite Laval, Mr. Demers has enjoyed an extremely accomplished career in business law over the past 32 years. He co-founded the Meighen Demers law firm in 1984, growing it from five to 46 practitioners. In 2001 the firm merged with Ogilvy Renault, where Mr. Demers served as managing partner of the Toronto office and a senior member of the firm's executive.

An experienced corporate director, Mr. Demers' practice has been primarily focused on mergers and acquisitions, including infrastructure and natural resource-related projects. He has received consistent professional acclaim in Canada and internationally and has been independently ranked as one of the leading project finance lawyers in the world by several directories of business lawyers.

"Jacques' professional qualifications are ideal in identifying and acquiring companies that, while good investments in their own right, have strategic value to us in surfacing private market assets," said Michael Nobrega, OMERS President and Chief Executive Officer.

"He will create a portfolio of what we call global access companies that through their work around the world are aware of attractive investments, such as airports, real estate developments, energy projects and other hard assets, before they become generally known to institutional investors.

"The new investment entity under the OMERS Worldwide brand will be an efficient means of extending the global reach of our real estate company Oxford Properties, our infrastructure company Borealis and the OMERS Private Equity team. It will put them in an advantageous position to evaluate prospective investments for their own portfolios," Mr. Nobrega said.

From its current offices in Toronto, Calgary and London, UK, OMERS Strategic Investments will market the talents and successes of all OMERS investment teams under a single OMERS Worldwide brand.

Reporting to Mr. Nobrega, Mr. Demers will be a member of OMERS senior executive team and the committee that reviews and approves all investments.

The OMERS pension fund has been ranked in the top quartile of Canadian pension funds in each of the last three years driven by solid returns in private market investments. The fund ended 2007 with net investment assets of C$52 billion.

OMERS is one of Canada's largest pension funds with a track record of exceptional performance and investments in a wide range of companies and assets around the world. OMERS provides retirement benefits to 380,000 members on behalf of over 900 different employers in the province of Ontario, Canada.
