ORLive Presents: Aortic Valve Replacement Procedure for Sclerosis Increasingly Popular Procedure

Live Webcast: Morristown Memorial: October 20, 2006 at 2:00 PM EDT (18:00 UTC)

MORRISTOWN, NJ -- (MARKET WIRE) -- September 21, 2006 -- Doctors specializing in open-heart surgery at Morristown Memorial Hospital, part of Atlantic Health, will perform an Aortic Valve Replacement live over the Internet on

"This is an opportunity for those considering this surgery to view a procedure that has become much more common over the last several years," said John Brown III, MD, chief of cardiovascular surgery at Morristown Memorial. "With the success of this type of surgery, we have liberalized our criteria for conducting this procedure. As the population ages and the technology advances, we are replacing cardiac valves for people in their 80s and even in their 90s."

Aortic valve replacement surgery is recommended when the valve does not open or close properly, forcing the heart to work harder to push the blood through to the rest of the body. The stressed heart becomes enlarged and damaged. Once the valve is replaced and calcium deposits removed, the heart will normalize. During the procedure, the heart is stopped, aorta opened and cleaned and the diseased valve is replaced with either a mechanical or biological valve.

Brown, who will perform the broadcast surgery, does more than 100 aortic valve replacement procedures each year. According to the American Heart Association, about 95,000 valve procedures were conducted throughout the country in 2003. Morristown Memorial has the largest cardiac surgery program in New Jersey, with more than 1,400 annually.

The surgery is the latest of several at the hospital aired live over the Internet. Earlier webcasts include minimally invasive hip replacement surgery, heart bypass surgery, gastric bypass surgery, minimally invasive chest surgery and a carotid endarterectomy, a procedure to clear a blocked carotid artery.
