OSSTF/FEESO Delegation to Honduras

TORONTO, ONTARIO--(Marketwire - Nov. 26, 2009) - The Ontario Secondary School Teachers' Federation (OSSTF/FEESO) is joining an international delegation travelling to Honduras to witness firsthand reported human rights violations, perpetrated by security forces of the illegitimate coup regime against citizens rallying for the restoration of democracy to Honduras. OSSTF/FEESO has asked Prime Minister Stephen Harper to suspend all aid to Honduras until the security forces cease their violence, and to demand a return to power of democratically elected President Manuel Zelaya. OSSTF/FEESO furthers supports the call by the Canada Labour Congress to restore Manuel Zelaya as President and postpone the November 29 elections until all Hondurans can enjoy a full three month campaign period in which all candidates can be assured safety on the campaign trail. Under the current coup regime, conditions for free, fair and open elections on November 29 are non-existent.

Since the June 28 coup d'etat against President Manuel Zelaya, Honduran teachers have been at the forefront of the efforts to restore democracy in Honduras. These courageous educators have continued to struggle at great personal cost to themselves and their families. A number of teachers have been killed and others arrested for simply demanding that democracy be restored.

Two representatives from OSSTF/FEESO joined 12 American and three other Canadian representatives as part of this international delegation which left for Honduras on November 25, 2009.

They include public high school teachers, occasional teachers, educational assistants, continuing education teachers and instructors, psychologists, secretaries, speech-language pathologists, social workers, plant support personnel, attendance counsellors, and many others in education.
