OSSTF Ready to Get the Job Done in Bargaining

TORONTO, ONTARIO--(Marketwire - Aug. 21, 2008) - Achieving good locally negotiated collective agreements was the main issue that Ken Coran, president of the Ontario Secondary School Teachers' Federation (OSSTF) focussed on during his address to the more than 300 OSSTF activists and leaders from across the province.

"When it comes to strength in numbers, OSSTF/FEESO has it and when we bargain, we bargain from that position of collective strength. Currently, 120 of our 135 bargaining units, which represent 96.8% of our membership, are in the process of negotiating new collective agreements," stated Coran.

"We began bargaining at the earliest opportunity and our priorities are straightforward. We want to ensure that in an era of declining enrollment, the current complement of education workers is not only maintained but also expanded and programs and services enhanced. We believe that smaller classes, increased individual student attention, cleaner and safer schools, more services and smaller waiting lists are what Ontario students deserve, he added.

"While some progress in bargaining was made before the summer, much more needs to happen to achieve collective agreements. We are looking for there to be progress in September and will monitor the situation. If there is no progress, we will take the appropriate steps to jump start the process. We are ready to get the job done," President Ken Coran concluded.

The OSSTF/FEESO Summer Leadership Conference runs over the weekend and is attended by over 300 union leaders from across the province.

OSSTF/FEESO, founded in 1919, has 60,000 members across Ontario. They include public high school teachers, occasional teachers, educational assistants, continuing education teachers and instructors, psychologists, secretaries, speech-language pathologists, social workers, plant support personnel, attendance counsellors, and many others in education and universities.
