Ombudsman to Investigate Legal Aid Ontario

TORONTO, ONTARIO--(Marketwire - Nov. 6, 2007) -

ATTENTION NEWS EDITORS:

Ontario Ombudsman Andre Marin today announced an investigation into the role of Legal Aid Ontario in funding the defence of Richard Wills.

The investigation will be conducted by the Special Ombudsman Response Team.

"The revelations in this case have the potential to shake the public's confidence in the integrity of the legal aid system. It is important that we take an objective look at what happened in this case, and if we uncover any gaps, we will make recommendations for improvement," said Mr. Marin.

"The Ontario legal aid plan prides itself as a service available to low-income and disadvantaged communities. It is an important part of the administration of justice in Ontario. The circumstances of the Wills case and the concerns of maladministration expressed by our judiciary cry out for an independent investigation of what may have gone wrong," Mr. Marin added.
