Ontario Companies Successfully Diversifying Their Markets With Help of Export Assistance

TORONTO, ONTARIO--(Marketwire - Dec. 11, 2008) - Thirty-one Ontario companies have received a helping hand in their efforts to break into new export markets in the early stages of the Export Market Access program, a program launched this summer by the Ontario Chamber of Commerce (OCC) and funded by the Ontario Government. Export Market Access is a cost-sharing program which supports Ontario's small and medium-sized enterprises.

"The assistance we're providing has come at a crucial time for Ontario firms that are trying to diversify their markets in an effort to combat the severe economic slowdown in the United States," explains Len Crispino, President & CEO of the Ontario Chamber of Commerce. "With our help in reducing the costs and risks, many of these innovative Ontario companies were able to physically and psychologically take the leap to these new markets."

The approved companies have received on average $10,000 to support their efforts to make direct contacts overseas, conduct market research and develop marketing tools specifically for a new foreign market. These companies support jobs in communities throughout the province including the GTA, Ottawa, Hamilton, Strathroy, Sudbury, Arnprior and Niagara-on-the-Lake.

"Wi-Sys Communications is a privately owned "boot strapped" GPS and Wireless Product Manufacturer, located in Ottawa. Like many High Tech SMEs in Ontario, the majority of our business is outside of Canada, and we have limited funds dedicated to marketing products and services abroad," explains Robert Dumont, Vice-President of Sales & Marketing at Wi-Sys Communications Inc. "The Export Market Access Program has allowed us to accelerate our sales expansion activities outside of North America, more specifically into Central and Eastern European markets. We are grateful for the OCC's support, especially in these hard global economic times."

Wi-Sys Communications Inc. develops and manufactures a variety of GPS systems. Representatives were recently sent to Munich, Germany to market the products of Wi-Sys Communications with the help of Export Market Access. This trip allowed Wi-Sys to make connections with customers that otherwise would have been out of reach.

While manufacturing companies make up the majority of those looking for assistance through Export Market Access, successful candidates also represent agriculture, professional and technical services, marketing, wholesale trade, culture and telecommunications industries.

Applications are processed on a continuous intake basis and many more applications are currently being processed. Funding decisions are made within 30 business days upon receipt of fully completed applications. The online application and information regarding eligibility criteria can be found at exportaccess.ca.
