Ontario Oil and Protein Seed Crops Committee Data Sends Clear Message-Genuity™ Roundup Ready 2 Yield™ Technology Provides Major Yield Advantage

GUELPH, ONTARIO--(Marketwire - Feb. 23, 2010) - Work recently completed by the Ontario Oil and Protein Seed Crops Committee (OOPSCC), an independent body responsible for the review and recommendation of new soybean varieties for registration, confirms the significant yield advantage delivered by Monsanto's new Genuity™ Roundup Ready 2 Yield™ trait technology. The Committee has recommended 165 new soybean lines containing Genuity™ Roundup Ready 2 Yield™ technology for registration. On average, the soybean lines containing this new technology out-yielded existing commercial varieties containing the original Roundup Ready® technology by 11.2 percent.*

Support by OOPSCC is based on performance of new soybean lines compared to that of current commercially available soybean varieties. Typically, new lines supported for registration by OOPSCC need to be as good, or better, than the current products to help ensure Ontario farmers are given the best opportunities to continually improve soybean yields.

"The Genuity™ Roundup Ready 2 Yield™ varieties supported for registration by OOPSCC this year represent the largest increases in yield relative to commercial checks that I have seen in my 24 years as a breeder," said Alejandro Hernandez, soybean breeding lead for Monsanto Canada, based in Guelph, Ontario. "The data speaks for itself – this new technology delivers a step change in yield relative to the original Roundup Ready technology. What is even more impressive is how consistent the increases are across the different lines submitted by several different seed companies."

In contrast to the large numbers of Genuity™ Roundup Ready 2 Yield™ soybean lines supported for registration, only 17 lines of the original Roundup Ready technology were supported by OPPSCC, all submitted by Pioneer Hi-Bred. The original Roundup Ready varieties supported for registration showed a modest 1.9 percent** yield increase relative to existing commercial varieties. Pioneer Hi-Bred chooses not to sell the Genuity™ Roundup Ready 2 Yield™ technology.

"We watched the performance of Genuity™ Roundup Ready 2 Yield™ soybeans in 2009, from the time they were planted, and early indications were they were going to be good," said Dr. Mark Lawton, technology development lead for Monsanto in Eastern Canada. "They were agronomically superior to original Roundup Ready soybeans right from the start and consistently had more pods and more beans, which ultimately translated to better yield."

In addition to Monsanto, four other companies submitted Genuity™ Roundup Ready 2 Yield™ soybean lines for approval. All soybean lines supported for registration by OOPSCC still require individual variety registration prior to being sold commercially and that is anticipated to come in time for the 2011 growing season. For the 2010 growing season, there are approximately 40 Genuity™ Roundup Ready 2 Yield™ varieties available from a number of leading seed brands.
