Ontario SPCA: Former Toronto Humane Society Supervisor Arrested

TORONTO, ONTARIO--(Marketwire - March 14, 2010) - Mr. Vijay Kumar a former supervisor at the Toronto Humane Society (THS) was arrested yesterday afternoon. The arrest and subsequent charges stem from an investigation launched in 2009 in response to allegations of animal cruelty against senior management and the Board of Directors of the Toronto Humane Society. The Ontario Society for the Prevention of Cruelty to Animals (OSPCA) conducted the investigation under the authority of the Ontario SPCA Act, 2009. Under the Act, the OSPCA is responsible for enforcing animal cruelty statutes in Ontario. It is also responsible for overseeing animal welfare shelters such as local humane societies.

Mr. Kumar, accompanied by his lawyer, turned himself into the Officer in Charge of the investigation, Kevin Strooband. He is charged with two counts of animal cruelty, both indictable offences under the Criminal Code of Canada. Mr. Kumar was processed at 52 Division of the Toronto Police department, and released later that day.

"Our first priority is the on-going safety of the animals", says Kevin Strooband, Officer in Charge of the investigation. "We continue to find it necessary to lay charges of this nature because of what we've un-covered during the course of the investigation since last June (2009)."

Mr. Kumar will appear in court on April 27, 2010 at Old City Hall.
