Ontario Trucking Association: Convoy of Smog-Free Trucks to Converge at Truckers Convention This Week

Media invited to view Ontario's new smog-free trucks

TORONTO, ONTARIO--(Marketwire - Nov. 14, 2007) - The Ontario Trucking Association will be unveiling some of the first of the new generation of smog-free trucks to be put into service in Ontario. The display is part of OTA's 81st annual convention which takes place Thursday, Nov. 15 and Friday, Nov. 16 at the Toronto Congress Centre (650 Dixon Road, Toronto). (The display is open only to registered delegates of the convention and the media).

The new trucks, which hit the market earlier this year, are the first that must - by law - meet tough new emission standards that will virtually eliminate smog-causing emissions from trucks between now and 2010. Trucks on display have been provided by the following manufacturers: Mack, Peterbilt, Volvo, Freightliner, Kenworth and International.

The 2007 and newer model year trucks are equipped with a device known as a particulate trap which filters out microscopic particulate matter (PM) known to be harmful to human health. The engines have also been designed to use environmentally responsible ultra low sulphur diesel fuel. The purchase price of the new trucks come at a steep price though - it costs about $8,000 more per unit to buy a 2007 model year truck than one built in 2006.

Trucking is the only freight mode in the country whose emissions - both from its fuel and from its engines - are so regulated.

The two-day convention brings together presidents, CEOs and senior managers of the country's trucking industry. It is the largest convention of its kind in Canada, and is the place where industry leaders meet to discuss important industry issues. The convention attracts over 4,000 business leaders each year.
