Open Kernel Labs Awarded Membership in the VisionMobile 100 Million Club
Mobile Virtualization Provider Sets the Mobile Market Standard With Deployment in More Than 500 Million Handsets
CHICAGO, IL--(Marketwire - December 9, 2009) - Open Kernel
Labs (OK Labs), the leading provider of embedded virtualization
software for mobile phones and broadband Internet devices, today announced
that its market-leading embedded virtualization solution, the OKL4 Microvisor,
has been included in the VisionMobile 100 Million Club. Updated
semi-annually, the 100 Million Club
(http://www.visionmobile.com/blog/2009/12/100-million-insights/) celebrates
software suppliers that have established significant share in the mobile
handset market through deployment inside 100 million or more handsets.
By June of 2009, OKL4 had expanded its presence into more than 300 million
devices, and has recently surpassed deployment in 500 million devices. OKL4
is now featured in must-have products such as the HTC G1 and G2, the HTC
Hero, the Motorola Cliq, the Palm Pre and the Toshiba TG01, as well as
other popular handsets. Moreover, the OKL4 Microvisor powered the world's
first commercially-available fully-virtualized smartphone, the Motorola Evoke QA4. OK Labs mobile
virtualization solution helped Motorola cut BOM costs by $46 per unit,
by enabling it to run two different OSes side-by-side, working together
seamlessly, all on a low-cost single ARM processor, with no performance
degradation.
OK Labs also extended its reach across the mobile/wireless ecosystem with
the addition of
ST-Ericsson, a world leader in wireless platforms and semiconductors.
After extensive evaluation, ST-Ericsson selected OK Labs as its
virtualization partner, enabling OKL4 access to an even greater portion of
the global mobile marketplace. The partnership with ST-Ericsson complements
the large and growing fleet of OKL4-enabled CDMA devices with TD-SCDMA,
HSDPA and other 3.5G and emerging 4G wireless technologies.
"Out of 250-300 companies licensing mobile software -- and the thousands of
third party software houses -- OK Labs is one of the few to have had its
products deployed on more than 100 million mobile handsets," notes
VisionMobile Research Director Andreas Constantinou. "Only 30 products have
managed to make it past the 100 million mark, making this a major
achievement."
"Since our first inclusion in the VisionMobile 100 Million Club one year
ago, OK Labs has also partnered with Citrix Systems Inc., a leading provider
of virtualization, networking and software-as-a-service (SaaS)
technologies, to provide solutions for delivering enterprise applications
to mobile devices," said Steve Subar, President and CEO, OK Labs. "Already
the standard, OK Labs mobile virtualization solution will soon enable the
entire mobile ecosystem, running software platforms and applications to
meet both corporate and personal needs in a single converged, virtualized
device."
