Optics.org Re-launch Demonstrates Vitality of Photonics Industry

CARDIFF, UNITED KINGDOM--(Marketwire - August 27, 2010) -  Photonics industry website Optics.org unveiled a new design and editorial focus in July, following transfer of ownership to SPIE. The portal features industry news and market analysis, product announcements, a buyers guide, an employment centre, and access to over 5,000 archived articles and product reviews compiled since 2003.

Editor-in-Chief Dr Mike Hatcher leads the new Optics.org editorial team, Robert Fisher is Head of Sales and Marketing, and Andy Stevens is Head of Information Technology.

"We have built an editorial strategy around four of the key sectors driving photonics technologies in commercial applications -- cleantech, industrial, life sciences, and defence," Hatcher said. "We're aiming to inform the industry about key market trends and business developments, by analyzing the latest news and providing in-depth reports on commercial activity in photonics."

Among recent articles are pieces on the potential for new commercial viability of concentrating photovoltaics, increased demand for LED lighting following recent technology breakthroughs, and new programs linking universities and companies in successful R&D partnerships.

"Advancing the field of photonics and fostering the applications, people, and companies that bring this technology to market are core to the mission of SPIE," said Dr Andrew J.W. Brown, SPIE Senior Director for Global Business Development. "I am excited about our recent acquisition and the re-launch of Optics.org, and the opportunity this brings to enhance the services SPIE provides to the industry. Optics.org's focus is also on serving the community, with up-to-date editorial content and market-relevant news, company, and product information, job opportunities, and more. Its global exposure, technically informed news coverage, and savvy market analysis create an indispensible resource."

Originally created by SPIE in 1996 and later acquired by the Institute of Physics Publishing, Optics.org was the first web portal designed to serve the information needs of the worldwide photonics community. The site now has more than 90,000 unique visitors each month, channelized content, and weekly e-mail alerts to 44,000 opt-in subscribers.
