Optimizing the Performance of Web Applications

Top-Performing Enterprises Face Challenges With Encryption and Security in Optimizing Web Application Performance

BOSTON, MA--(Marketwire - December 18, 2009) - Today's web applications deliver data that if exposed can compromise company intellectual property, expose individuals and companies to financial damage, legal actions and damage to the company or organizations brand reputation. More than half of all Aberdeen Group survey respondents identified encryption as a key challenge as they balance security with optimal performance of business critical web applications. "Optimizing the Performance of Web Applications - Direction for Improvement," the latest research report from Aberdeen Group, a Harte-Hanks Company (NYSE: HHS), reveals that encryption is not the only challenge enterprises contend. The report identifies how top-performing companies are achieving optimal web application performance and business results.

Aberdeen Group surveyed over 100 organizations and asked how they approach the challenges for optimizing web applications, then identified the strategies and capabilities that impact business performance. These companies are struggling to resolve challenges including:

-- 75% are challenged to improve performance of web applications requiring
    traffic encryption.
-- 65% are concerned with the impact of server virtualization on web
    application performance.
-- 55% are concerned with the impact of proliferating smart phones and
mobile devices on web application performance.

"Security of information needs to be a top priority for organizations. In light of recent highly publicized events the challenge will increase as organizations balance goals for superior performance and the most effective security," said Jeffrey DeBarros, senior research analyst, Aberdeen. "Improved performance of web applications is delivered by understanding the demands on infrastructure, test environments, and end-to-end monitoring. Organizations that assess, troubleshoot and mitigate web application performance realize a dramatic increase in end-user satisfaction, application availability, and, ultimately, revenue and profitability."
