Ten years from now, depression will be the second leading cause of premature death. Those in their 50s and 60s today have the most to lose if not properly addressed, and the most to gain by embracing new medical evidence that supports active aging.

Carrie Erickson-Lawes is the National Manager of Life Enrichment Programs at Origin Active Lifestyle Communities, the first organization in Canada to build residential communities for the older adult that are dedicated active aging. Erickson-Lawes designs Origin's unique seniors programs such as ThinkFit(TM), that keeps the brain active and healthy.

"The goal is optimal brain health," said Erickson-Lawes. "It's not just about puzzles and discussion, but about how they work together. It's cross-training for your brain. Programs like this are helping seniors live longer and combat the onset and severity of chronic illnesses like depression, dementia, diabetes and osteoporosis."

She recalls one woman in her 80s who came to Origin frail, malnourished and needing round-the-clock nursing care. The woman was unable to cook for herself and virtually lived on tea and toast. She could not get out of bed, or get dressed without help. Now, she is incorporating programs like Swing(TM) and Original Expressions(TM) into her daily routine, eating properly and requires no nursing care at all.

Many adverse health conditions that impact people as they age are affected by issues like irregular blood glucose levels, muscle loss and bone strength, which are more function related rather than age related. Experts say this is good news and recommend the following for middle-aged people to do now in order to live longer, more enriched lives:

- Eat properly - Full, balanced meals are critical for energy production and vitamin intake.

- Decrease stress - Take time for yourself and your family every day.

- Get moving - Exercising as little as thee times per week for 20 minutes a day will have impact.

- Rest up- Have a minimum of seven to eight hours of sleep per night.

- Get a life - There is more to life than just work. Stay social and prevent depression from setting in after retirement.
