Over Six Million Homeowners Forced to Take Time Off Work Due to Home Emergencies

MANCHESTER, UNITED KINGDOM--(Marketwire - June 20, 2010) - Millions of homeowners across the UK have been forced to take time off work in the last twelve months to deal with a home emergency.

Broken boilers, leaking pipes and electricity failures have all led to 25% of UK homeowners taking valuable days off work, according to a poll* by the UK's leading high street insurance retailer, Swinton.

Of those 25%, over half needed to take a full day off work to deal with the emergency, with a further 13% taking at least two days off.

Only 15% of those surveyed had home emergency insurance to cover the unexpected expense.

Steve Chelton, insurer development manager at Swinton home insurance said: "Following the worst winter in the UK for over ten years, it's not surprising we've seen a rise in the number of home emergencies over the last twelve months, many of which will have resulted from the freezing conditions.

"For a small annual fee, it's definitely worth considering taking out home emergency insurance to complement an existing home insurance policy. Good home emergency insurance policies will offer 24 hour assistance, providing valuable peace of mind and access to hundreds of approved tradesmen in your area."

The top five home emergencies according to the poll were:

  1. Broken boiler

  2. Gas failure

  3. Electricity failure

  4. Burst pipe

  5. Blocked drain
