PIPSC: Federal Auditors Rally in Montreal to Protest Ill-Conceived CRA Scheme Stalling Negotiations

OTTAWA, ONTARIO--(Marketwire - Aug. 21, 2009) - Fed up with spinning their wheels at the negotiating table and with unfair workplace conditions, several hundred employees of the Canada Revenue Agency (CRA) represented by the Professional Institute of the Public Service of Canada (PIPSC) are rallying in front of the Tax Services Office in downtown Montreal over the lunch hour.

The Institute has been negotiating in good faith with the Agency for close to two years, with nothing to show for its efforts. Meanwhile the CRA is moving forward with plans to incorporate hundreds of auditors currently employed by provincial governments across the country who do not possess the proper skills, knowledge and relevant experience. Incredibly, this ill-conceived scheme will not result in any added revenue for the government, as these additional resources will not be assigned to problem areas where most tax "leakage" occurs.

Gary Corbett, President of the Institute, commented: "This is absolutely not about more money for our members. The financial aspects of our contract were legislated earlier this year through the Expenditure Restraint Act. It's about the federal government bargaining in good faith with its professional employees, treating them with respect, and making sure that all CRA auditors are fully qualified to do their jobs".

"This demonstration will remind the Agency that our members will not lie down and agree to a bad contract. It will also raise Canadians' awareness of the lack of respect with which this government treats its public service employees ", added Corbett.

The Professional Institute of the Public Service of Canada represents 57,000 engineers, scientists and other professionals across Canada's public sector, including more than 10, 000 employed by the CRA, approximately 500 of whom are located in Montreal.
