Palestine House Press Release and an Invitation to a Press Conference to Commemorate the 60th Anniversary of the CATASTROPHE (Palestinian NAKBA)

TORONTO, ONTARIO--(Marketwire - Jan. 11, 2008) -

Attention: City, Foreign Affairs and Community Editors

2008 is an important year for the Palestinian community. In 1947-1948, over 60% of the Palestinian population was expelled from their homes and lands by Zionist militia. In total, 531 Palestinian villages were destroyed and 11 urban neighborhoods emptied of their Palestinian communities. We call this expulsion Al Nakba, the Catastrophe, and in 2008 we shall commemorate 60 years of this forced exile.

Israel, a state resembling South African apartheid, was built on the land from which we were ethnically cleansed. Israel defines itself as a Jewish state and through a series of laws and other measures denies full equality to the Palestinians who remained on the land. In the West Bank and Gaza Strip, Palestinians live under military occupation in a situation akin to open-air prisons.

Sixty years on, while Palestinian refugees remain the largest refugee population in the world, we remain steadfast in our struggle for freedom and our right to return.

We oppose states based on a single race, ethnicity or religion. We call for an end to occupation, full equality for Palestinian citizens of Israel, and the right of Palestinian refugees to return to their homes and lands from which they were expelled.

Around the world, events and activities will be held commemorating the 60th anniversary of Al Nakba and we would like to invite your organization to show up at the press conference:
