Panel of Experts Discusses How Museums Are Not Just for Tourists

LOS ANGELES, CA--(Marketwire - December 21, 2009) - As part of LA Arts Month, TOWN HALL Los Angeles convenes the panel "Museums Not Just for Tourists." Panelists will tout the importance of citizens supporting their local cultural offerings and the diversity of Los Angeles museums' exhibitions on Tuesday, January 5, 2010 at 11:00 AM. The panel takes place at MOCA -- The Museum of Contemporary Art, Los Angeles and follows the kickoff event for the second annual Los Angeles Arts Month.

Panelists include Ford W. Bell, DVM, President, American Association of Museums; Michael Govan, Chief Executive Officer, LACMA - Los Angeles County Museum of Art; Charmaine Jefferson, Executive Director, California African American Museum; Chon A. Noriega, Director, UCLA Chicano Studies Research Center, Professor, UCLA Department of Film, Television, and Digital Media; Paul Schimmel, Chief Curator, MOCA - The Museum of Contemporary Art, Los Angeles. The panel will be moderated by Marc Pally, Artistic Director, Glow. The panel will also speak to how metropolitan museums cross lines of identity and ethnicity to create a comprehensive narrative.

Speaking about the role of museums in the community, Ford Bell said, "If museums are to continue to be integral to the fabric of America's communities, large and small, we must engage with our increasingly diverse populations. Museums are created to serve the public, and their commitment is to provide opportunities for education, engagement and wonder to everyone in their communities."

Participants will also be treated to a private viewing of MOCA's current 30th anniversary exhibition of its world-renowned permanent collection of post war art, "Collection: MOCA's First Thirty Years." In its second year, Los Angeles Arts Month returns in celebration of the performing arts. LA Arts Month is a collaboration between arts leaders, private partners and local arts organizations.
