Paper-based Medical Records Questioned in the Wake of Katrina: Wisconsin Leads the Way Towards EMR Reform

MONTREAL, QUEBEC--(CCNMatthews - Oct. 11, 2005) - VisualMED Clinical Solutions Corp. (OTCBB:VMCS)

The Wisconsin Technology Network reports that in the wake of hurricane Katrina, and the destruction of thousands of paper-based medical records along the Gulf Coast, public pressure is mounting for a national standard to store medical records electronically. Electronic medical records (EMR) are much more durable and secure than the paper-based systems generally employed by hospitals.

The government of the state of Wisconsin is leading the way toward EMR reform, recently establishing a $10 million grant program to oversee the development and implementation of electronic medical record technology.

Recent news of strong federal support for Healthcare Information Technology initiatives has furthered the already growing interest for products such as VisualMED's, in a national and global healthcare environment that can no longer resist increasing pressure for quality of care and cost accountability.

In July, President Bush signed into law the Patient Safety and Quality Improvement Act of 2005, an important step in standardizing the general shift away from paper-based medicine, and toward the widespread deployment of information technology solutions to reduce medical error and cost.

"We feel this establishes a precedent for individual states to take the lead in promoting information technology deployment," says Gerard Dab, VisualMED Chairman & CEO. "If state policy begins to follow the Federal lead on these issues, the chances that hospitals adopt IT solutions to control cost, improve quality of care, and provide secure documentation will increase significantly."
