Pensions, Bargaining on Agenda at CUPE NB Convention

FREDERICTON, NEW BRUNSWICK--(Marketwire - March 24, 2010) - The New Brunswick Division of the Canadian Union of Public Employees, the largest union in the province with 24,000 members, will gather about 250 delegates in Fredericton from March 25-27 for its 47th annual convention.

Among key issues, participants will discuss:

  • Plans for provincial bargaining covering 10,000 CUPE members working in social services, education, general trades and labour, and as court stenographers;
  • Political action in preparation for the September 2010 provincial elections;
  • Ways to promote progressive taxation as the bedrock for public services;
  • And, in the context of Canada's pension crisis, solutions to ensure Canadians have decent, secure retirement income.

WHO: -CUPE National President Paul Moist will host a forum on pensions
at 5:30 p.m. and address delegates at 8:30 p.m. on Thursday
  -CUPE NB President Daniel Légère will present his report at 7:00 p.m. on Thursday
  -Canadian Labour Congress Secretary-Treasurer Hassan Yussuff will address delegates at 9:00 a.m. on Friday
  -CUPE National Secretary-Treasurer Claude Généreux will deliver remarks at 2:30 p.m. on Friday
  -N.B. Federation of Labour President Michel Boudreau will address delegates at 3:30 p.m. on Friday
