PetSmart Charities® Celebrates 4-Millionth Adoption

"Chloe," a Rescued Collie-Mix, Is the 4-Millionth Pet to Find a Lifelong, Loving Home at a PetSmart Charities Adoption Center

PHOENIX, AZ--(Marketwire - January 9, 2010) - A one-year-old collie-mix named Chloe in Rockaway, New Jersey, has found her forever home, thanks to Eleventh Hour Rescue and PetSmart Charities. Chloe's adoption tale is anything but ordinary, however. The rescued dog who'd been abandoned and almost faced euthanasia at a crowded shelter is the 4-millionth pet to be adopted at a PetSmart Charities Adoption Center.

The Jancarek family of Randolph, N.J., adopted Chloe during the holiday season. The Jancareks in 2009 lost both of their beloved dogs to cancer. Missing canine companionship, they decided to rescue a dog.

"Our house is not a home without a dog," said Sharon Jancarek. "We contacted Eleventh Hour Rescue and they told us to come see the available dogs at the PetSmart store. When we saw Chloe, we instantly clicked. We knew she was the dog for us."

The family includes wife Sharon, husband Stephen and son Christopher. Chloe also joins a hamster named Henry, a rabbit named Fluffy and many fish. Christopher, 12, and Chloe became fast friends shortly after the adoption, and Chloe is settling in nicely with her new loving family.

Eleventh Hour Rescue is an all-volunteer, nonprofit agency that takes in dogs who are slated for euthanasia. Chloe had been abandoned and neglected before Eleventh Hour stepped in to rescue her.

"Chloe is a darling dog with an amazing personality," said Linda Schiller, executive director of Eleventh Hour Rescue. "When she arrived we knew immediately that she was special."

"Reaching this milestone is an amazing testament to the goodwill of people who open their hearts and homes to pets in need," said PetSmart Charities Executive Director Susana Della Maddalena. "Through the support of PetSmart and a partnership with more than 2,000 animal-welfare organizations, shelters and rescue groups throughout North America, we have adopted 4 million pets, and just two years after reaching our 3 millionth adoption. This brings us closer than ever to ending the tragedy of euthanasia -- a tragedy that claims the lives of millions of homeless pets every year."

In the U.S. alone, an estimated 6 million to 8 million dogs and cats enter animal shelters each year, but 3 million to 4 million never find homes. For every minute that the PetSmart Charities' Adoption Centers are open, one pet's life is saved. Nonprofit PetSmart Charities is the largest facilitator of pet adoptions in the United States and the largest funder of animal-welfare efforts in North America, and strives to create and support programs that save the lives of homeless pets.

A celebration honoring Chloe and the Jancarek family took place Saturday, January 9 at the PetSmart® store in Rockaway, N.J. Eleventh Hour Rescue received a $4,000 grant check from PetSmart Charities to recognize the role it played in reaching this important goal. Chloe and the Jancarek family received a lifetime supply of Authority brand dog food, courtesy of PetSmart® as well as PetSmart pet-training and grooming services for life and a wide-range of gifts including treats, beds and toys.

Among those on hand for this special event were: Jaye Perricone, senior vice president of Real Estate for PetSmart, Inc., and a member of the PetSmart Charities, Inc. Board of Directors; Susana Della Maddalena, executive director and vice president of PetSmart Charities, Inc.; Linda Schiller, executive director of Eleventh Hour Rescue; the Jancarek family and Chloe; and numerous PetSmart® and PetSmart Charities associates.
