Planning Institute of BC/Media Release: Nanaimo Urban Design Plan Wins Provincial Award

VANCOUVER, BRITISH COLUMBIA--(Marketwire - June 3, 2009) - The Planning Institute of BC (PIBC) has named the City of Nanaimo's Downtown Urban Design Plan and Guidelines the best in the province.

The plan, coordinated by D'Ambrosio architecture + urbanism, in association with Citizen Plan and Nanaimo's Design Advisory Panel, was the third phase in a series of recent initiatives for the downtown. It won first place in the Site Planning and Design category at the PIBC's annual awards ceremony.

The plan impressed the judges with its clear, well thought out presentation that was designed to appeal to professionals and the general public.

"The document reads like a well-written urban design text book, walking the reader through all 12 distinct areas of the downtown core," said PIBC President Lindsay Chase. "This is a must-read for anyone practicing or studying urban planning and urban design, and it will serve the people of Nanaimo well."

The project involved the community through the Planning Commission, Neighbourhood Associations and the Downtown Nanaimo Partnership. The PIBC considers public engagement a key aspect of any planning exercise.

The PIBC, through its Awards Committee and Awards Program, recognizes excellence in the planning profession and amongst its members. Other award winners included:

- District of West Vancouver: Community Dialogue on Neighbourhood Character and Housing (Comprehensive Policy and Plans under $75,000)

- Cities of Colwood and Langford: Joint Official Community Plans (Comprehensive Policy and Plans $75,000 and over)

The PIBC also awarded two student fellowship awards. These awards allow student members to participate and present their academic work at the 2009 BC Land Summit held in Whistler at the end of May. This year's winners are:

- Nancy Hofer, a student in the UBC School of Environmental Planning

- Jeff Zukiwsky, a student in the SFU School of Resource and Environmental Management (Planning) program.
