February 03, 2010 13:30 ET Travels a Long Way From Railroad Salvage to Become the Best Name in Area Rugs

EMPORIA, KS--(Marketwire - February 3, 2010) - H.M.S. Enterprises' is well-known for one thing: area rugs. But it was H.M.S. Enterprises' start in railroad salvage over 40 years ago that solidified their sales philosophies (to buy only goods that can be sold at low prices, stock large quantities of everything sold, provide courteous sales service without pressure sales, and keep costs down so that the customer will find greater values), and helped them achieve their reputation as the best name in area rugs.

H.M.S. Enterprises was founded in the early 1960s by Henry M. Smith of St. Paul, Kansas, who owned and operated several grain elevators in Southeast Kansas. Henry would work with his sons, Miles and Larry, to reclaim spilled grain from railroad accidents. Besides reclaiming the grain for other companies they would occasionally bid on it themselves. Eventually they were asked to submit bids on other railroad salvage and they purchased a warehouse next to their grain elevator office in Brazilton, KS to store items such as lumber, furniture, appliances, or other miscellaneous railroad salvage.

In February of 1965 Henry, Miles and Larry formed the company Derailed Commodities to market railroad and insurance salvage, close-out inventory, unclaimed goods, and building materials such as paneling and lumber. In 1969 Larry and Miles traded some paneling for carpet which was the beginning of what would eventually lead to over 16 million dollars a year in floor covering sales today.

By 2001 H.M.S. Enterprises owned a total number of 15 carpet stores to 15, all with central distribution and offices out of Brazilton, KS, and in 2002 debuted on the Web. Although rugs for the home are a far cry from railroad salvage, remains true to its roots, offering the best customer service online with the lowest prices on the widest selection of area rugs.
