PowerStream Reaches New Heights in Environmental Leadership

Utility acknowledged by peers, receives EDA’s Environmental Excellence Award

TORONTO, ONTARIO--(Marketwire - March 31, 2010) - PowerStream, the utility which delivers electricity to several communities located immediately north of Toronto and in Central Ontario, has once again been recognized for its leadership and innovation when it comes to developing programs related to the environment.

PowerStream was honoured by its peers Monday evening, at the Electricity Distributors Association (EDA) Annual General Meeting, where it was awarded that organization's Environmental Excellence Award in recognition of several programs the utility implemented in 2009. In addition to resulting in measurable environmental and economic benefits, PowerStream's implementation of these programs also demonstrated stewardship, innovation and applicability in that the initiatives could be readily adopted by other utilities. PowerStream's 2009 environmental programs included:

Vanpool Program

  • PowerStream launched a vanpool program for its employees. This program eliminated eight personal-use vehicles from the roads five days a week. Currently, there are two vanpool vans in use that eliminate 16 personal-use vehicles from the roads. As a result, PowerStream has been able to reduce greenhouse gases (GHG) by approximately 160.29 tonnes and eliminated approximately 503,360 kilometres of travel annually by employee vehicles.

Other Commuting Opportunities

  • PowerStream has an employee carpool program, transit program and in-house bicycles for employee use that also significantly contribute to a carbon footprint reduction.

Waste Diversion Program

  • In 2009, PowerStream introduced a three-stream waste diversion program at all the company's facilities. This program was the "first-of-its-kind" custom three-stream waste diversion system that is manufactured from 100% recycled product.

External Outreach

  • PowerStream has established an external Regional Environmental Committee (Aurora, Markham, Richmond Hill, Region of York, Vaughan and Barrie/Simcoe) to support environmental events and initiatives.
  • The company is actively involved with university and college students in the "Connections" program where graduate students are mentored to complete programs in environmental studies to include: fleet (use of bio-diesel) and oil containment for transformers.
  • PowerStream actively participates in community environmental events to promote and mentor others with cutting-edge environmental initiatives.
  • The company has a dedicated page on its corporate website that promotes the environment and its "Go Green with PowerStream" philosophy.
  • PowerStream uses its fleet vehicles to provide environmental messaging that is seen by hundreds of thousands of people within all communities in their service territory and beyond.

"At PowerStream, the Board of Directors, and the Executive and Senior Management Teams recognize and embrace the value of building a sustainable environment and we encourage everyone else to do the same." said Brian Bentz, President and CEO of PowerStream. "PowerStream welcomes the opportunity to share what we have done on the environmental front with other utilities in the province. We all have the responsibility to foster sustainability and show leadership in the communities we serve."
