Prevent Blindness America Announces National Consumer Awareness Campaign

Campaign Highlights Need for Better Vision Education and Eye Health

CHICAGO, IL--(Marketwire - November 12, 2007) - Prevent Blindness America today announces the launch of a national consumer awareness campaign highlighting the organization's commitment to eye health across the United States.

The campaign, a trio of television, print and radio public service announcements made possible by an educational grant from Pfizer, underscores the importance of regular eye care for every generation.

The PSAs will be distributed to 800 television stations and cable networks, 1,500 radio stations and 100 Web sites in an effort to raise awareness about the importance of preventive eye care.

Age-related macular degeneration (AMD), cataract, diabetic retinopathy, primary open-angle glaucoma, refractive error, visual impairment and blindness are all issues that can be prevented with regular eye examinations beginning at an early age. In fact, 50% of all cases of blindness could be prevented through early interventions like vision screenings and dilated eye exams. Recent research by Prevent Blindness America shows that more than 50,000 Americans will go blind from diabetes, 1.6 million from macular degeneration and 3.3 million will lose their sight to glaucoma, highlighting the devastating effects of vision loss in the United States.

Recently HR 3750, the Vision Preservation Act of 2007, was reintroduced to Congress with the help of Prevent Blindness America. The goal of this legislation is meant to strengthen federal programs to prevent blindness and save sight through increased vision screening, treatment and vision rehabilitation efforts at the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC), the Maternal and Child Health Bureau, and Federally Qualified Health Centers. The bill would also strengthen efforts to rehabilitate individuals with vision loss to ensure that they remain healthy, active, and independent.

The consumer awareness campaign, created with the help of advertising agency Draft FCB and supported through public relations efforts by GolinHarris public relations agency, will allow Prevent Blindness America to reach a diverse audience with the simple message that vision loss, if handled today, is preventable tomorrow.
